Farmers need our support now more than ever

We’ve all seen about the farmers protests in London as a result of the new labour budget and “tractor tax”, but what exactly has changed and why is it affecting so many farmers?
Farms have usually been kept within families for generations, and you’ll hear about 3rd generation or 5thgeneration farms for example quite a lot. Farmers are passionate about what they do, and so they should be as they’re feeding the nation. But now passing farms down to the next generation is going to be subject to 20% tax on any land or assets over £1 million, which will only cover the smallest farms.

This has a huge impact on the vast majority of farmers, as they are typically asset rich but cash poor, so would result in selling assets to be able to cover tax, putting their generations of hard work under jeopardy. Further to this, it also puts the nation’s food supply at risk, with a high number of smaller family-owned farms likely to be most affected by the changes in the budget.

Whilst we can’t change the policies set out by labour government, here at The Veg Round we’re committed to standing by farmers in campaigning for these policies to be reversed, and we will of course keep sourcing our produce locally at a fair price to support farmers as best we can, and hopefully going forward we can grow to have a bigger and bigger positive impact on British farming, and we appreciate you for joining us on this journey! Farmers don’t do the job they day for an easy life or for the money, they do it as it’s their passion, what they love and because it’s essential for all our lives!
